1. What are the benefits of Moringa?
Moringa oleifera, commonly referred to as just moringa, miracle tree or drumstick tree, has recently grown in popularity for its many health benefits. What are those benefits you may be asking? In 5 minutes or less I’ll share those benefits: anti inflammatory, anti tumor, wound healing, liver support, brain support, bone health, heart health, lung support, complete protein.
How does it achieve these benefits? Moringa is nutrient dense being high in vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C (when fresh) and folate. It also hosts a wealth of minerals: calcium, potassium, iron, phosphorous, magnesium and zinc.
Antioxidants play a role in moringa’s health benefits. Antioxidants scavenge free radicals in the body and prevent inflammation and oxidative stress.
Moringa helps balance blood sugar. Moringa is effective at optimizing blood pressure. It also optimizes cholesterol levels and support the health of the vascular system.
Leaves are an immune system booster while the seeds are immunosuppressive which is useful for autoimmune diseases and organ transplants.
Prevents kidney stones – root reduces oxalates in the body.
Kidney support and detox of heavy metals from the body.
Aids in the production of breast milk for nursing mothers.
2. What does moringa taste like?
Moringa powder is similar to matcha in many ways. It has a green flavor that is a little abrasive and a little sweet. When added to smoothies and oats, about 1 to 2 tsp is enough before you really notice the taste. Moringa tea has an earthy flavor that is reminiscent of an unsalted vegetable broth. The sticks, stems and/or leaves can be used to make tea. Lemon grass and moringa make a good tea blend.
When I prepare moringa I usually mix it into recipes with other ingredients. It works well in both savory and sweet recipes as long as you don’t use too much. The definition of “too much” will vary from person to person and between recipes.
3. Is moringa a superfood?
Hell yeah. Turns out it’s one of the superest of superfoods. All parts of the plant can be used in some functional way with each part supporting different health functions. See my “what defines a superfood” video for clarity on this subject. A superfood needs to have a higher than normal concentration of nutrients than other everyday foods.

4. Can you take moringa everyday? Yes, but don’t exceed ¼ cup of leaf powder, which is around 60 grams. This is because moringa is high in iron. I found the max serving recommended online of 70 grams of dried powder. I believe this is too much unless it is spread out over the day. I take around 2 tsp a day with ease. I accidentally put ¼ cup (4 Tablespoons / 60 grams) in a smoothie once and drank it because I didn’t want to waste it. It was too much. I experienced a variety of unpleasant symptoms for about 2 hours. I also had diarrhea for about an hour or so and eventually felt fine.
1 TB = 15g So ¼ C will give you 60 grams, don’t take it all at once… you’ve been warned.
5. Can moringa help you lose weight?
Possibly. There have been a couple of human studies with moringa/turmeric supplements that yielded positive results. The only question is: was it the moringa or the turmeric or both that effected the results?
Bottom line is moringa is a superfood that provides dense nutrition and likely satiates the appetite. When you’re body is nourished, you’re less likely to crave unhealthy snacks and foods. End result is that you lose weight and experience positive changes.
Try moringa for weight loss. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. If you can get between 2 teaspoons to up to as much as 2 tablespoons a day you’ll do great. Be sure to watch my video on proper daily intake for more info on those amounts.
